Why I Don't Paint Trees -

I paint forests, but I don’t really paint trees.

At first glance, my paintings might look like landscapes—dense forests, branches, layers of color, spaces that seem to invite you in. But I have never been interested in painting a forest exactly as it exists in nature.

The forest I paint is somewhere else.

It is the forest that exists inside each of us.

On Being Ill

I started thinking about the forest as an internal space: a place that can hold many things at once. Fear can exist next to beauty. Loneliness can sit beside joy. Confusion can appear alongside calm.

There are memories, desires, things we understand about ourselves, and things we don't. There are parts of ourselves that we know well, and others that remain unfamiliar, even to us.

And perhaps that is what makes the forest such a powerful image for the inner world.

Just like a real forest, we don't always know what is waiting behind the next tree.

There are parts we can see clearly, and parts that remain hidden. Some paths feel familiar, while others feel uncertain. Sometimes there is light coming through the branches; sometimes the space becomes dense and difficult to navigate.

This is what interests me about the forest—not the trees themselves, but what the forest can represent.

My forest is not the same as yours.

What feels peaceful to one person might feel unsettling to another. A particular color might bring back a memory. A certain space might feel familiar without us knowing why.

Our inner landscapes are shaped by everything we have experienced—what we remember, what we have lost, what we fear, what we love, what we hide, and what we are still trying to understand.

That is one of the reasons I don't want my paintings to have one fixed interpretation.

I want the viewer to enter the painting with their own forest.

When I work on these paintings, I am not trying to recreate a specific place.

I build the image through layers, colors, shapes, movement and space. Sometimes the painting begins with a feeling. Sometimes it starts with a color or a combination of colors that I can't stop thinking about.

The meaning often becomes clearer while I am working, rather than before I begin.

I don't always know exactly where a painting is going when I start it. Sometimes I discover the painting as I make it.

Perhaps this is also where my background in architecture quietly enters the process.

Architecture taught me to pay attention to space—to how shapes relate to each other, how an area can feel open or enclosed, and how depth and structure can change the way we experience a place.

But in these paintings, I am not designing a physical space.

The trees and branches become less important as individual objects.

They become lines, shapes, barriers, openings, and layers.

They create a space that can feel dense, expansive, intimate, or even slightly disorienting.

And maybe that is closer to how our inner world actually feels.

We are rarely one thing.

We can be happy and afraid at the same time.

We can feel connected and lonely.

We can remember something with warmth and sadness together.

We can want to move forward while still being attached to something behind us.

We can carry beauty and pain in the same place.

There is no straight path through an inner forest.

Maybe that is why I keep returning to it.

Not because I want to paint the same forest again and again, but because there are always more layers to discover.

A different feeling.

A different memory.

A different way of seeing.

And perhaps the forest changes as we do.

So when someone looks at one of my paintings and says, “This is a forest,” I usually think:

Yes—but not quite.

It might be yours.

Or mine.

Or perhaps a place that exists somewhere between the two.
