Why the Right Artwork Isn't Meant for Everyone

لماذا لا يجب أن يكون العمل الفني مناسبًا للجميع؟

For years, I believed the success of a painting depended on one simple thing: that everyone would like it. Whenever I started a new canvas, I found myself asking questions I rarely said out loud.

Will people like this one? Will it fit into most homes? Will it be easy to understand? I thought that was the artist's job—to create something that no one could disagree with. But after years of exhibitions, studio visits, and conversations with collectors, I realised I had been asking the wrong question.

لسنوات طويلة، كنت أعتقد أن نجاح اللوحة يعني شيئًا واحدًا فقط: أن تعجب الجميع.

في كل مرة أبدأ فيها لوحة جديدة، كان سؤال يتسلل إلى ذهني دون أن أشعر: هل سيحبها الناس؟ هل ستناسب معظم البيوت؟ هل ستكون سهلة الفهم؟

كنت أظن أن هذه هي مهمة الفنان؛ أن يبتكر عملًا لا يختلف عليه أحد.

لكن مع مرور الوقت، وبعد معارض عديدة، وزيارات للاستوديو، وأحاديث لا تُنسى مع مقتني الأعمال الفنية، أدركت أنني كنت أطرح السؤال الخطأ.

The moments that stay with me are rarely the ones when everyone gathers around the same painting. Instead, they are the quiet moments. Someone walks past every "popular" piece in the room, stops in front of a painting that everyone else ignored, and simply says,

"This is the one."

أجمل اللحظات بالنسبة لي لم تكن عندما يتجمع الجميع أمام اللوحة نفسها. بل عندما يتجاوز أحدهم أكثر الأعمال لفتًا للانتباه، ويتوقف أمام لوحة لم يلتفت إليها معظم الزوار، ثم يقول بهدوء:

"هذه هي."

Not because it is the largest. Not because it matches the furniture. Not because it is the most expensive. But because something within it feels strangely familiar.

That moment reminds me that art has never been about convincing everyone. It has always been about finding the person it was meant to meet.

When I paint, I don't feel as though I'm creating a product. I feel as though I'm giving life to a personality.

ليس لأنها الأكبر حجمًا. ولا لأنها تناسب ألوان منزله. ولا لأنها الأكثر شهرة أو الأعلى سعرا. بل لأنه رأى فيها شيئًا لم يره أحد غيره.

في كل مرة يحدث ذلك، أتذكر أن الفن لم يكن يومًا محاولة لإرضاء الجميع، بل محاولة لأن يجد كل عمل الشخص الذي كُتب له.

حين أرسم، لا أشعر أنني أصنع منتجًا, أشعر أنني أمنح كل لوحة شخصية مستقلة.

Some paintings are calm. They slow a room down and invite silence. Others are restless, full of movement and tension. Some reveal themselves immediately. Others ask for patience before they begin to speak.

Just like people, no two paintings carry the same presence. That is why I don't expect everyone to respond to them in the same way.

هناك لوحات هادئة، تدخل المكان كما يدخل الضوء في الصباح، فتمنحه سكينة لا تحتاج إلى تفسير. وهناك لوحات مليئة بالحركة، تملأ الجدار بالحياة، وكأنها ترفض الصمت.

بعض الأعمال تكشف نفسها منذ النظرة الأولى، وأخرى تحتاج إلى وقت، تمامًا كما يحدث مع بعض الأشخاص الذين لا نكتشف جمالهم إلا بعد معرفة أعمق. ولهذا لا أتوقع أبدًا أن يتفاعل الجميع مع أعمالي بالطريقة نفسها.

People often ask why I don't simply create more versions of the paintings that sold quickly. The answer is simple. If I only repeated what had already succeeded, I would slowly stop listening to my own voice and start listening only to the market.

يسألني البعض أحيانًا: "لماذا لا ترسمين المزيد من اللوحات المشابهة لتلك التي بيعت بسرعة؟"

والجواب بالنسبة لي بسيط. لأنني إذا كررت النجاح نفسه مرة بعد أخرى، فسأبدأ برسم ما يطلبه السوق، لا ما أريد أنا أن أقوله.

Art loses something essential the moment it becomes repetition.

Every painting deserves its own identity. Its own language. Its own reason for existing.The same is true for the people who stand in front of it.

No two collectors arrive carrying the same memories.

الفن يفقد جزءًا من روحه عندما يتحول إلى تكرار. وأؤمن أن لكل لوحة الحق في أن تمتلك صوتها الخاص، وشخصيتها الخاصة، وسببها الخاص للوجود. والأمر نفسه ينطبق على من يقف أمامها.

فنحن لا ننظر إلى اللوحات بعيوننا فقط، بل بكل ما نحمله معنا. بذكرياتنا. بتجاربنا. بالأماكن التي عشنا فيها. بالأشخاص الذين غيّروا حياتنا. وبالمشاعر التي يصعب علينا وصفها بالكلمات.

The places we've lived, the people we've loved, the losses we've carried, the moments that shaped us—these become part of how we see.

That is why one person may stand in front of a painting with tears in their eyes, while another walks past without feeling anything at all.

Neither reaction is wrong. They are simply different stories meeting the same canvas. This is also why I secretly hope that not every painting in my exhibition speaks to you.

In fact, I hope at least one of them doesn't. Because if every work appealed to everyone equally, they would probably all be saying the same thing. A meaningful exhibition needs contrast.

لهذا قد يقف شخص أمام لوحة فتلامس شيئًا عميقًا داخله، بينما يمر شخص آخر أمامها دون أن يشعر بأي ارتباط. ولا يعني ذلك أن أحدهما يمتلك ذوقًا أفضل من الآخر. بل يعني أن لكل إنسان قصته الخاصة، وأن كل قصة تبحث عمّا يشبهها.

لهذا السبب أيضًا، لا أتمنى أن تعجبكم جميع أعمالي. بل ربما أتمنى أن تجدوا بينها عملًا واحدًا على الأقل يلامسكم. قد تبدو هذه فكرة غريبة، لكنها بالنسبة لي دليل على أن كل لوحة تمتلك شخصيتها الحقيقية.

A meaningful exhibition needs contrast. Quiet works beside bold ones. Gentle colours beside dramatic textures. Paintings that comfort. Paintings that challenge. Paintings that reveal themselves immediately. And others that wait until the right person arrives.

Trying to please everyone often produces work that offends no one—but moves no one either.

فالمعرض الذي تبدو فيه جميع الأعمال متشابهة، وتثير الشعور نفسه لدى الجميع، هو معرض يفتقد التنوع.

أما المعرض الذي يضم أعمالًا هادئة وأخرى جريئة، أعمالًا مشرقة وأخرى غامضة، أعمالًا تكشف نفسها سريعًا وأخرى تحتاج إلى التأمل، فهو يمنح كل زائر فرصة لأن يجد العمل الذي يشبهه.

محاولة إرضاء الجميع غالبًا ما تنتج أعمالًا آمنة. لا يكرهها أحد. لكنها أيضًا لا تترك أثرًا عميقًا في ذاكرة أحد.

The paintings that leave the deepest impression are usually the ones that divide opinion. Some people love them. Others don't understand them. That isn't weakness. It's personality.

As artists, we sometimes fear rejection. We wonder whether a painting is successful only if enough people admire it.

أما العمل الذي يثير الإعجاب لدى بعض الناس، وربما الحيرة أو حتى الرفض لدى آخرين، فهو غالبًا عمل يمتلك شخصية واضحة وصوتًا صادقًا.

Over time, I've learned that success cannot be measured that way. Sometimes the painting that receives the least attention during an exhibition becomes the one someone cannot stop thinking about for weeks.

Sometimes the work everyone admires is not the one anyone takes home. Because collecting art has never been about choosing the "best" painting.

It is about recognizing the one that somehow recognizes you. If you are looking for a painting that everyone will love, you may never find it.

فالعمل الذي مرّ أمامه الجميع دون اهتمام، قد يصبح بالنسبة لشخص واحد أهم قطعة فنية امتلكها في حياته.

واللوحة التي يتحدث عنها الجميع، قد لا تكون هي اللوحة التي يختار أحد أن يعيش معها. لأن اقتناء الفن لا يبدأ بالإعجاب. بل يبدأ بالشعور.

ذلك الشعور الصامت الذي يخبرك أن هذه اللوحة، بطريقة يصعب تفسيرها، تشبهك. إذا كنت تبحث عن لوحة تعجب الجميع، فربما لن تجدها أبدًا.

But if you are looking for a painting that feels like it belongs in your life—one that reflects something words cannot explain—that is a very different search.

I no longer hope that every visitor loves every painting I create. I hope each person finds one painting that feels as though it was waiting for them all along. Perhaps there isn't a painting meant for every home. But I believe there is a home waiting for every painting.

And perhaps... one of them is still waiting to find you.

أما إذا كنت تبحث عن لوحة تشعر أنها تنتمي إلى حياتك، وتعكس جزءًا منك، فهذه رحلة مختلفة تمامًا. اليوم، لم أعد أتمنى أن يحب الجميع كل ما أرسمه.

كل ما أتمناه هو أن يجد كل شخص لوحة واحدة يشعر بأنها كانت تنتظره منذ البداية. ربما لا توجد لوحة تناسب كل منزل. لكنني أؤمن أن هناك منزلًا ينتظر كل لوحة. وأن هناك لوحة تنتظر شخصًا واحدًا فقط.

وربما... هي الآن تنتظر أن تجدك.

A beautiful space is more than a collection of furniture, lighting, and decorative objects. While these elements contribute to comfort and functionality, art is often what gives a space its true character and soul.

المكان الجميل ليس مجرد مجموعة من قطع الأثاث والإضاءة والإكسسوارات المتناسقة. فرغم أهمية هذه العناصر في خلق مساحة مريحة وعملية، يبقى الفن غالبًا العنصر الذي يمنح المكان روحه الحقيقية.

Artwork has the unique ability to transform interiors by adding personality, emotion, and visual depth. A blank wall may serve its purpose, but a carefully selected piece of art can create a focal point, shape the atmosphere of a room, and build a deeper connection between a space and the people who experience it.

للأعمال الفنية قدرة فريدة على تحويل المساحات من خلال إضافة الشخصية والمشاعر والعمق البصري. فالجدار الفارغ قد يؤدي وظيفته كجزء من المكان، لكن اللوحة المختارة بعناية تستطيع أن تخلق نقطة جذب بصرية، وتؤثر في أجواء الغرفة، وتبني علاقة أعمق بين المكان والأشخاص الذين يعيشون فيه أو يزورونه.

One of the most powerful qualities of art is its ability to tell a story.

Whether abstract or representational, artwork invites reflection and personal interpretation, creating emotional responses that differ from one viewer to another. This added layer of meaning is often what distinguishes a beautiful space from a memorable one.

ومن أكثر ما يميز الفن قدرته على سرد القصص. سواء كان العمل تجريديًا أو واقعيًا، فإنه يفتح المجال للتأمل والتفسير الشخصي، ويخلق استجابة عاطفية تختلف من شخص لآخر. وهذا المعنى الإضافي هو ما يجعل بعض المساحات جميلة، بينما يجعل أخرى لا تُنسى.

Color also plays a significant role in this transformation. Artwork can introduce new tones, strengthen an existing palette, or create contrast and balance that bring energy to a room. In many interiors, art becomes the element that ties all design components together.

كما يلعب اللون دورًا أساسيًا في هذه العملية. فالعمل الفني قد يضيف ألوانًا جديدة إلى الفراغ، أو يعزز لوحة الألوان الموجودة، أو يخلق توازنًا وتباينًا يمنحان المكان حيوية أكبر. وفي كثير من الأحيان تصبح اللوحة العنصر الذي يربط جميع مكونات التصميم ببعضها البعض.

Beyond aesthetics, art has a profound influence on how a space feels. Color, texture, movement, and composition all contribute to the emotional experience of an environment. Some artworks inspire calmness and contemplation, while others bring energy, vibrancy, and a strong visual presence. Choosing art is therefore not only about what looks beautiful, but also about how a space is meant to feel.

ولا يقتصر تأثير الفن على الشكل البصري فقط، بل يمتد إلى الشعور الذي يخلقه داخل المكان. فالألوان والملمس والحركة والتكوين البصري جميعها تؤثر في الطريقة التي نتفاعل بها مع المساحات من حولنا. بعض الأعمال الفنية تبعث إحساسًا بالهدوء والتأمل، بينما تضيف أعمال أخرى طاقة وحيوية وحضورًا قويًا. ولهذا فإن اختيار العمل الفني المناسب لا يتعلق فقط بما يبدو جميلًا، بل بما يجعل المكان يشعرنا به.

Art also helps define identity. Homes, hotels, offices, and public spaces often use artwork to communicate values, character, and atmosphere. The pieces chosen for a space reflect the people behind it and shape how visitors perceive and remember it.

كما يساهم الفن في تشكيل هوية المكان. فالمنازل والفنادق والمكاتب والمساحات العامة تستخدم الأعمال الفنية للتعبير عن شخصيتها وقيمها والأجواء التي ترغب في إيصالها. وغالبًا ما تعكس الأعمال المختارة ذوق أصحاب المكان وتؤثر في الطريقة التي يتفاعل بها الزوار معه.

This is one reason why certain interiors feel more refined and luxurious than others. While furniture and lighting provide comfort and structure, original artwork adds a level of individuality and authenticity that cannot be replicated. Art does not simply fill a wall—it gives a space its unique voice and creates a richer visual experience.

ولهذا السبب تبدو بعض المساحات أكثر تميزًا وفخامة من غيرها. فبينما يمكن للأثاث والإضاءة أن يوفرا الراحة والجمال، يضيف الفن طبقة من التفرد والأصالة لا يمكن تكرارها. العمل الفني الأصلي لا يملأ فراغًا فقط، بل يمنح المكان شخصية خاصة ويخلق تجربة بصرية وإنسانية أكثر عمقًا.

From another perspective, art can also be viewed as a long-term investment. Unlike many decorative elements that are replaced over time, artwork remains relevant both aesthetically and emotionally. In many cases, its value can grow with the years, becoming not only part of a space but also part of the memories and stories connected to it.

ومن منظور آخر، يعد الفن استثمارًا طويل الأمد. فعلى عكس العديد من عناصر الديكور التي تتغير أو تُستبدل مع مرور الوقت، يبقى العمل الفني حاضرًا بقيمته الجمالية والعاطفية، وقد تزداد قيمته مع السنوات. فهو لا يصبح جزءًا من المكان فحسب، بل جزءًا من الذكريات والقصص المرتبطة به.

For this reason, art should never be considered an afterthought in the design process. It is far more than a decorative addition. In many cases, it becomes the defining element that gives a space its identity and leaves the strongest lasting impression.

لهذا السبب لا ينبغي النظر إلى الفن باعتباره إضافة أخيرة في عملية التصميم، أو مجرد وسيلة لملء جدار فارغ. ففي كثير من الحالات يكون العمل الفني هو العنصر الذي يمنح المكان شخصيته ويترك الانطباع الأقوى في ذاكرة من يراه.

The difference between a space that feels unfinished and one that feels complete is not always another piece of furniture or a decorative accessory. Sometimes, it is a single work of art.

فالفرق بين مساحة تبدو غير مكتملة وأخرى تنبض بالحياة ليس دائمًا قطعة أثاث إضافية أو تفصيلًا ديكوريًا جديدًا. أحيانًا يكون هذا الفرق عملًا فنيًا واحدًا فقط.
